To answer the question head-on, unfortunately, tumor marker tests are completely meaningless as screening tests to determine whether or not cancer is present in the body. Tumor marker tests are used as cancer indicators because they contain substances produced by cancer as it invades. As cancer progresses, characteristic substances increase in the blood. In some cases, tumor marker tests will only be positive if the cancer has progressed and metastasized to other organs. There are also many cases where the numbers do not rise even when metastasis has occurred throughout the body. Furthermore, some tumor markers may react even when no cancer is present due to a person's constitution. As a test to determine whether or not cancer is present, tumor marker tests are completely meaningless! As an exception, prostate cancer, which occurs in men, is detected by a tumor marker called PSA, which can detect cancer at an early stage. It is still meaningful to measure prostate tumor markers during checkups for men over 40.
