California New Way of Grading Sparks Controversy Among Parents, Teachers and School

"My kids came and told me there's a new grading system coming up. Every kid gets a 50 percent floor for every test. You can retake the test if your grade is less than a C and there's no homework. All of a sudden, if you put a different grading scale, the students will not understand," Sangeetha Shanbhogue says. Some California school districts are adopting a new grading policy known as "grading for equity," which has raised concerns among parents. Ms. Shanbhogue is one of the parents in Dublin Unified where grading for equity is being put into practice. To understand this concept better, we sit down with Joe Feldman, author of "Grading for Equity," Superintendent Chris Funk of Dublin Unified School District, and Laurie Sargent, a Dublin Unified teacher who was on the committee to review the pilot program. "Students could have identical performance but get a different grade depending on which teacher they have. I found that there were ways that we can improve grading; we can make grading more equitable, which means more accurate and more fair and more motivational for students," Mr. Feldman explains.
