Conférence de de Stephen Bates "Away from home" (En anglais) Le jeudi 21 mai 2026 à l'École d'architecture Paris-Malaquais – PSL * The lecture reflects on the theme of ‘away from home’ in the form of the public interior as a place of invitation and public interaction and in the form of a way of practice, working from the margins and towards an open-ended collaborative design process. Both aspects of this theme challenge convention, either by the way they re-think archetypal typologies or in the way they redefine authorship. Projects presented will include the KANAL Centre Pompidou project in Brussels, The MHKA competition entry in Antwerp and the Performing Arts Quarter in Leuven. * Stephen Bates co-fonde en 1996 l’agence Sergison Bates architects avec Jonathan Sergison. À travers sa pratique et son enseignement, il explore le rôle de l’architecture à toutes les échelles — de la fabrique urbaine à l’espace domestique — en concevant des bâtiments ancrés dans leur contexte, intégrant la dimension historique du tissu urbain existant, et les enjeux de durabilité du point de vue environnemental, économique et social. Professeur invité notamment à l’EPFL de Lausanne et à l’Université d’Harvard, il est depuis 2009, professeur à l’Université technique de Munich. Stephen Bates co-founded Sergison Bates architects in 1996 with Jonathan Sergison. Through his work and his teaching he has explored the role of architecture at all scales, from city-making to domesticity, designing buildings that are rooted in place, engaged with the historical dimension of existing urban fabric, responsive to the challenges of environmental, economic and social sustainability. At the core of this lecture series are several fundamental questions: since the city is the quintessential place of exchange and hybridization, can the specificities of European built environments provide answers to the challenge of the global generic metropolis? What is the role of architecture as a contextual element — at the neighborhood scale, in terms of density, social diversity, and the balance between urban and rural spaces?
