United States Presidents Who Died in Office

This video briefly discusses each president who died in office whether from assassination or from natural causes from as early as 1841 to 1963. This isn't an in-depth video on the topic but rather a summary about the presidents, their deaths and their historical significance. Over the course of United States history eight presidents have died before finishing their terms. Four of these presidents died of natural causes and the other four were killed by gunmen. The first two presidential deaths took place in the span of just (1841 and 1850) nine years with William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, both members of the Whig Party. Harrison died of pneumonia and Taylor of a stomach aliment. Though it's commonly stated that Harrison came down with a cold after giving the nation's longest inaugural address it's more likely that he died due to contamination in the sewage system in Washington D.C. Taylor's death, commonly thought to have been caused by food poisoning from iced milk and cherries, has also been attributed to the septic problem by historians. The next three presidential deaths were caused by gunshot wounds. Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by Confederate symapathizer John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865 and died the following day. Fellow Republican James Garfield was murdered by a derranged officer seeker, Charles Guiteau in 1881. William McKinley was killed in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. Modern medical experts and history researchers believe Garfield and McKinely's deaths could have been prevented had it not been from tampering by their doctors. Warren G. Harding and Franklin Roosevelt died of natural causes. A heart attack killed Harding in 1923 and Franklin D. Roosevelt died due to mounting health problems which he'd suffered with all throughout his presidency. Both men were succeeded by their vice presidents, Calvin Coolidge and Harry S. Truman who went on to win elections in their own right. FDR was the first Democrat to die in office. John F. Kennedy's assassination was the most recent when he was shot and killed by Marxist Lee Harvey Oswald. Kennedy was killed instantly and the infamous Zapruder film captured the grisly scene. The circumstances around the subsequent murder of assassin Oswald have left the latest presidential assassination shrouded in mystery and conspiracy theories.
