DART® Tsunami Detection Buoy
DART® real-time tsunami monitoring systems, developed by NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, are positioned at strategic locations throughout the ocean and play a critical role in tsunami forecasting. When an earthquake generates a tsunami, the tsunami wave is measured by the DART® buoy, and transmitted via satellite to the tsunami warning centers, where it is incorporated into computer models to improve forecast accuracy. See http://nctr.pmel.noaa.gov/Dart for details.
