How could an army of over 250,000 men go from conquering almost an entire city to disappearing within it? The Battle of Stalingrad reached its decisive point in November 1942, when Operation Uranus struck the weak Romanian flanks protecting the German 6th Army. What seemed to be just another Soviet offensive turned into one of the most devastating encirclement maneuvers in military history. While German divisions continued fighting among destroyed factories, basements, and ruins on the banks of the Volga, enormous Soviet armored formations advanced from the north and south to close a gigantic trap around Stalingrad. The closing of the encirclement transformed an offensive campaign into a desperate fight for survival. Inside the pocket, Friedrich Paulus's 6th Army was trapped with hundreds of thousands of soldiers, thousands wounded, limited fuel, and dwindling reserves. Hermann Göring's promise of air supply quickly became an unsustainable illusion. While the Pitomnik and Gumrak airfields became the only link to the outside world, rations dwindled, horses were slaughtered to feed the troops, and the wounded piled up awaiting an evacuation that rarely came. At the same time, debates between Paulus, Seydlitz, Manstein, and Hitler revealed an internal struggle as intense as the fighting on the front lines: break the encirclement or remain in Stalingrad. Each lost day strengthened the Soviet ring and reduced the chances of escape. The last opportunity arose with Operation Wintergewitter, when Hermann Hoth's forces advanced from Kotelnikovo and reached within a few kilometers of the encirclement. However, Hitler's refusal to authorize the break doomed any possibility of salvation. From January 1943, Operation Ring began to systematically crush German positions until the encirclement was divided into two isolated sectors. The fall of Pitomnik, hunger, exhaustion, and lack of ammunition accelerated the final collapse. On January 31, Paulus was captured in the center of Stalingrad, and on February 2, the last German forces laid down their arms. The destruction of the 6th Army marked one of Germany's greatest military disasters and a definitive turning point in World War II.
