Toronto c.1856: Restored To Life in Amazing Rare Photos of a Lost City
Beginning in 1856, the city of Toronto contracted the firm Armstrong, Beere and Hime to take photos of the city for the British Colonial Office. The British Colonial Office was deciding which city to make the capital of The Canadas and these photos were sent to London. Toronto lost the bid, but these are some of the earliest known photographs of the city of Toronto. The photos were taken from the roof of the Rossing House Hotel at the southeast corner of King and York Streets. 25 pictures were taken in total. 13 of which make up an almost complete panorama of the city!
