Grief as catechist, wife and two young children die in Naivasha–Nakuru highway crash

Grief has engulfed a family in Ndundu village, Gatundu North, following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of a catechist, his wife and two young children along the Naivasha–Nakuru highway. James Njoroge Kabari, a catechist at St Mary Catholic Church in Ridgeways, perished alongside his wife Teresiah Wanjiru and their sons Michael Kabari, aged six, and one-year-old John Mark Kabui. The family died in a fatal accident that occurred on January 5, 2026, at the Karai area while travelling towards Gilgil. Njoroge is reported to have been driving his wife back to Gilgil, where she worked as a primary school teacher, when the tragedy struck. Their daughter, Clare Wairimu, who was also in the vehicle, narrowly escaped death and is currently hospitalised at Nairobi West Hospital’s Naivasha branch. She survived the crash together with the family’s house manager and a friend who were also travelling with them. At the family’s rural home in Ndundu village, a sombre mood prevails as relatives and neighbours struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss. The deaths have left a deep void, particularly for Njoroge’s elderly parents, who depended heavily on him. The family described Njoroge as the main breadwinner who catered for the medical needs of his parents, both of whom suffer from age-related illnesses. He had also been planning to renovate his parent’s house this January as he expanded his own home, plans that were cut short by his untimely death. His ailing father, Joel Kabari, has also been left distraught, having relied on his son for support in meeting hospital bills and other basic needs. The loss has compounded the family’s emotional and financial burden and as preparations for the burial begin, family members appealed to well-wishers for support, saying the scale of the tragedy is overwhelming and beyond their current means.
