Why the Book of Boba Fett’s Flashbacks Do Not Work | Star Wars Video Essay

Star Wars the Book of Boba Fett shows the aftermath of Return of the Jedi and the rise of the former bounty hunter’s criminal empire. And while the show does have great action sequences, colorful new characters, and a good shot of nostalgia, it feels disjointed and slow. We think the culprit is the structure: the flashbacks were a mistake. Flashbacks are best used to spur on movement in the present day. But the flashbacks in the Book of Boba Fett are jarring, and grind the present day action to a halt. This video sites examples of the terrific uses of flashing back: Godfather 2, Orange is the New Black, and more…to show why The Book of Boba Fett’s structure is flawed. The flashback sequences are terrific, showing the rise of Boba Fett from the belly of the Sarlaac and becoming a Sand Person…but they should have been presented chronologically–as part of a more cohesive story.
