The Island in the Sky | Babcock State Park | West Virginia Hiking Trails
Located in Babcock State Park, just a short 20 minute drive from the New River Bridge, is the Island in the Sky Trail. This is a short trial that starts near the famous Glade Creek Grist Mill, and continues uphill to a shelter on top of a cliff. The total hike is roughly one mile out and back. The views at the top are a little lack luster and overgrown, but the trail itself is an interesting one that winds its way near rock formations and through dense layers of Rhododendron. This hike would be spectacular in the spring, as the flowers bloom, and in the fall as the leaves change colors. This hike is on the upper end of easy to the lower end of the moderate scale. If you are visiting the New River Gorge National Park, then consider taking an extra hour or so to visit the Glade Creek Gristmill at Babcock State Park and taking on the island in the sky trail. #bushesonthetrail #babcock #hiking
