He was one of the leading pillars of modern Hindi literature. After completing his MA in English Literature from Government College, Lahore, in 1937, Sahni earned his PhD from Punjab University in 1958. After Partition, he returned to India and worked as a newspaper writer. After teaching in Ambala and Amritsar, he became a professor of literature at Delhi University. He worked as a translator for a foreign language publishing house in Moscow. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamas in 1975, the Shiromani Writer Award (Punjab Government) in 1975, the Lotus Award of the Afro Asian Writers Association in 1980, the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan award of the Government of India in 1998. His major works include novels: Jharokhe, Tamas, Basanti, Mayadas ki Madi, Kunto, Neelu Nilima Nilofer; story collections: Meri Pyaari Kahaniyan, Bhagyarekha, Wangchu, Nishachar; plays: Hanush, Madhavi, Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein, Muavze; autobiography: Balraj My Brother; children's story: Slingshot Ka Khel.
