Interview with Gees Recycling on JEC World 2024: Composites Recycling featuring outstanding surfaces
How to recycle 5,000 tons of wind blades in just one plant. One of our society's huge problems in the future will be the aging of windturbine blades. Each of these blades contain usually 8 metric tons of fibreglass. Add the resin then you see the scale of problem that we will be facing or are already facing. During JEC World 2024 I came across a very promising project funded by the European Commission that I'd like to bring to your attention. Read more about the project here: https://www.pladostelma.com/en/life-g... Refresh project is a European funded large scale recycling of wind blades project. Gees Recycling is a partner in this project alongside The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA and several other partners The project's purpose is about the transformation of the scrap. The used wind blades are transformed into different kind of products, using Gees' proprietary mechanical recycling technology and other technologies like resin and fiber recovery. According Giorgio Betteto it is a broad project that will lead to recover 5000 tons a year of wind blades only in their own plant plus many other with different technologies. The aim of the European Commission funded project is to transform a problem into a realworld solution and to demonstrate of what is possible to obtain from such a large composite waste like wind blades. The results may be applied to many other large dimension composite waste, like that from yachting, from tanks and from boats and soforth. We Composites Lounge agree that it's really a good opportunity for all partners, for EUCIA and mostly for the composite world. In this video I interviewed Giorgio Betteto of Gees Recycling. We start of by inspecting some samples he brought along of recycled composites that feature very solid surfaces. These are hard as ceramic and therefore not only water repellant, but also such impact proof that the can be used as floor tiles. See the pictures attached in the video. Consider joining our Composites Lounge Community on LinkedIn. On our #composites360OnTour we are always on the outlook on innovative technologies that foster sustainability. If that is you, drop me an InMail here on LinkedIn and we'll discuss how we can leverage on it, because most innovations do flop not because no-one needs it, but because you are unable to reach a relevant wider audience with it.
