Today lasers are commonly used for medical purposes. As a result, it is important to understand the hazards that may occur when using lasers and the appropriate safety measures that should be taken. The general considerations for the safe use of medical lasers will be discussed in this course. A laser always contains three basic elements: a medium, an energy source, and an optical cavity. When the protons of the laser light come in contact with a material, different interactions are possible. Possible interactions are: transmission, reflection, and absorption. A laser device can cause damage to the skin, eyes, burn the airway, and ignite materials within an OR. There are risks related to inhaling laser smoke and risks related to the non-functioning of the device. For example a damaged fiber or uncontrolled actions of the device due to a malfunction. Accidental activation of the laser via footswitch is one of the most commonly reported accidents. Therefore needs to be clear which footswitch is the correct one, to prevent accidental activation of the laser device. Also, the control panel should never be left activated and unguarded.
