Zandpol wint Stieltjeskanaalderby van DSC'65

FOOTBALL - Zandpol Football Club won the 'Stieltjeskanaal derby' against DSC'65 on Sunday afternoon, winning 1-2 after a 1-0 halftime score. Captain Stefan Knuppe scored the winning goal, firing a free kick from about 20 meters into the top corner. With the victory, Zandpol remains second in the 5th Division G, six points behind the still undefeated DVC'59. Zandpol also needed a win to stay on the heels of the seemingly unassailable DVC'59, but struggled against DSC'65. The team, managed by Hendrie Meppelink, was only one point behind Zandpol and could therefore move towards the top spots with a win. DSC'65 played more easily and had three good chances to open the scoring. The third opportunity resulted in the deserved goal, scored by Jasper Hoving, who slotted home a beautiful shot after some good preparatory work from Justin Meppelink. In the second half, Zandpol equalized through Raymond Weber, who found the net in the 54th minute with a completely unmarked shot. A disappointment for the home side, who, by marking the Zandpol striker duo of Knuppe and Jordan, effectively took the sting out of Zandpol manager Tonnie Menke's team. A brilliant free kick from Stefan Knuppe even made it 1-2 in the 22nd minute. DSC'65 remained confident of a good result, but a great chance for Jasper Bunskoek was saved by Zandpol goalkeeper Mario Klasen. Joost Strijtveen came closest to equalizing in the final minute, but his effort hit the post, allowing Zandpol to leave the pitch as winners. DVC'59 remains top of the table. The team from Nieuw-Dordrecht has 23 points from nine matches. Zandpol is six points behind.
