Drum Teacher Reacts: Anika Nilles Isolated (La Villa Strangiato LIVE)

After reacting to Anika Nilles performing La Villa Strangiato with Rush, I wanted to take things a step further. So I isolated the drums from the performance and synced them back up with the concert footage. Without the rest of the band, you can hear every detail that makes this performance so remarkable. Every accent. Every subdivision. Every dynamic change. Every ghost note. This performance also highlights one of the biggest challenges in progressive rock drumming. Odd time signatures don't sound musical unless you completely own the subdivisions. Throughout this video we listen together while I break down: • 7/4 phrasing • 7/8 groupings • Dynamic control • Accents • Touch • Musical phrasing The deeper I dig into these isolated performances, the more impressed I become. What Anika is doing here isn't just technically difficult. It's controlled. It's musical. And it's unbelievably consistent.
