Pico do Arieiro to Stairway to Heaven WITH KIDS | PR1 Madeira Family Hike

We hiked the famous PR1 Pico do Arieiro trail in Madeira, Portugal with our kids — and it was one of the most breathtaking (and nerve-testing!) family hikes we’ve ever done. Very different from my solo hike the day before in very windy conditions Tips for families: Wear proper hiking footwear — there are plenty of stone steps and uneven surfaces. Stay hydrated, especially on sunny or windy days. The paths are well maintained and clearly marked, with lots of built-in steps and railings in many sections. Be extra careful on the narrower parts of the trail — some sections have steep drop-offs and can feel exposed. If you’re okay with a few heights and take it at your own pace, this hike rewards you with some of the best views in Madeira, Portugal
