On the Rise: Linda Kasonde on Progress and Barriers for Women in Law

In this episode of the SAIPAR Podcast, we are joined by Linda Kasonde, a distinguished legal practitioner, author, civil society leader, and the first female President of the Law Association of Zambia. The conversation is inspired by SAIPAR’s Discussion Paper, “On the Rise: Women Lawyers in Zambia,” which Linda co-authored with our Director Research and Programmes, Marja Hinfelaar. The report provides an important evidence-based reflection on the experiences of women lawyers in Zambia, highlighting both the progress that has been made and the barriers that continue to shape women’s advancement in the legal profession. Linda discusses the broader challenges faced by women lawyers, including under-representation in senior leadership, limited recognition at the Bar, gendered expectations, caregiving responsibilities, sexual harassment, access to mentorship and sponsorship, and the need for more inclusive legal institutions. Linda also argues that AI can enable women to have more flexible schedules as it can make them more efficient when put to good use. She also reflects on her own personal journey and how working for a merit-based institution shaped her legal career, ultimately catapulting her into a prominent leadership role which had previously only been held by men. This episode asks an important question: as more women enter Zambia’s legal profession, what must change to ensure that they are supported to lead, thrive, and receive equal recognition? Watch, share and join the conversation on building a legal profession where women are not only present, but fully recognised, supported and empowered to lead. #SAIPARPodcast #LindaKasonde #WomenInLaw
