Trauma is actually a meaningless negative experience. The moment we can give meaning to a negative experience, it is no longer trauma. It enters another horizon and even becomes therapeutic. St. Silouan: “Keep your mind in hell and do not despair.” St. Sophrony said that for our era, another way to acquire grace would be to give thanks for everything, including illness. So here are two perspectives that are not different in terms of effects. Both bring grace. Each of them combines a positive and a negative element. The tension between the positive element (thankfulness) and the negative one (illness) gives rise to repentance and protects us from falling. If, for example, the positive element (thankfulness) is missing, and we live only with the negative one (illness), the risk is to fall into despair. What does it mean to "cling to Christ"? It means that there should be no more intermediary between our heart and Christ. It is about an immediacy of the relationship with Christ. Let us not put anything between us and Him. Let there be this bareness of our soul in maximum sincerity towards Christ. Let us live, therefore, completely sincerely before Him, so that there should no longer be any kind of cunning, concealment or crookedness that would come between us and Christ.
