Watch THIS Before Hiking to Bowtells Swing Bridge! (Six Foot Track - Megalong Valley)
The Bowtells Swing Bridge is one of the most iconic photo spots in the Blue Mountains, but so many hikers set out on this trail completely unaware of what actually lies between the car park and the crossing! Starting at the Megalong Cemetery, this famous section of the Six Foot Track is just under 6.5kms each way. We tackled this hike in mid-Autumn and the weather was absolutely spectacular. While the trail is very well-defined the entire way, don't let that fool you—the undulating terrain means a reasonable level of fitness is definitely required. What makes this walk so unique is the terrain it covers. The trail passes right through working private property (please be respectful and stay on the marked track!), and surprisingly, it routes you right past a beautiful local winery if you want to reward yourself with some wine tastings and lunch along the way! Once you navigate down to the bottom, you are greeted by the Coxs River. It was stunning in the Autumn light, but if you do this trek when the weather warms up, it is an amazing spot for a wild swim before tackling the hike back out. Beyond the scenery, the bridge itself carries an incredible story. It is named in honour of Corporal Bob Bowtell, a Blue Mountains local and Royal Australian Army Engineer who tragically lost his life during the Vietnam War. The bridge you walk across today is actually the second bridge at this location—it is a brand-new structure that opened in late 2024 to replace the original 1992 bridge built by Bowtell's fellow army engineers.
