Cássia is located 392 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte. The municipality of Cássia began its development in 1750, with the establishment of an inn for travelers traveling between Ibiraci and Passos. At the time, the boundaries of the captaincies of São Paulo and Minas Gerais had not yet been defined, and this was only resolved in 1764. With the scarcity of gold mines in the mid-1800s, especially in Desemboque, many families began to migrate to other regions to establish farms. The area around the inn, between Ibiraci and Passos, became highly sought after due to the quality of its forests, fertile soil, abundant water, and pleasant climate. Over the years, other families settled around the inn to provide services on farms in the region or set up businesses to meet the growing demand of travelers along that route, forming the Jacuí settlement. In 1844, Manuel Lourenço da Cunha, José Diogo Carrijo da Cunha, João Batista da Cunha, and Roque Portes Vieira donated land in the Jacuí village to form the Santa Rita de Cássia estate for the construction of a chapel dedicated to the saint, which was completed in 1846. The growth of livestock and pig farming brought prominence to the village of Santa Rita de Cássia, which belonged to the jurisdiction of Passos and became a district of Jacuí in 1866. On May 24, 1892, it became a municipality under the name of Santa Rita de Cássia, and in 1919, its name was changed to Cássia. Today, September 2024, the municipality of Cássia has a population of approximately 18,000 inhabitants, a land area of 665.802 km², at an altitude of 740 m, and is bathed by rivers, streams, and tributaries of the Rio Grande River that belong to the Paraná River basin. The municipalities bordering the municipality of Cássia are: Delfinópolis, Passos, Itaú de Minas, Pratápolis, Capetinga, and Ibiraci.
