In 2016, there were just under 4,700 crimes, but by 2023, there had already been 7,000. The members of the families have a Turkish-Arabic migration background and ties to Lebanon. The figures also clearly show: people with clan membership are significantly more likely to commit crimes than members of the general population. Conflicts within clan families, or between clans and bikers, are repeatedly resolved with violence, even in public. In May 2022, for example, there was a shootout between Hells Angels and clan members at a Duisburg market, in which only by sheer luck no one was killed. In June 2023, there were mass brawls in Castrop-Rauxel and Essen, in which knives, machetes, and firearms were found. In response to this phenomenon, Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) took a hard line against the clans – but does this really achieve anything? And how can this type of crime be curbed? Reporter Felix Hutt wants answers and exclusively accompanies investigators in their complex work, which also reveals that clan members do not shy away from threatening police officers. Felix Hutt and his camera crew also witness the police trying to prove members of a family are trafficking cocaine – and we even get exclusive access to the raid. What will the police find?
