In 1944, German prisoners at Maine's Camp Houlton—including former U-boat sailors who had hunted Allied shipping—were transported to coastal towns and put to work on lobster boats. No handcuffs. No guards aboard. Just rubber gloves and the open Atlantic. The Americans calculated that geography was better security than chains. Where would an escaped prisoner go? The ocean offered no escape route. And the prisoners understood that working the boats was better than sitting behind wire.
