Perspective: Dialogue over Deadlock: The Way Forward | 22 July, 2026

Unrelenting protests and repeated adjournments have once again brought the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament to a standstill during the Monsoon Session. The government has reiterated its willingness to discuss the issues raised by the Opposition, including the NEET paper leak, while maintaining that the discussion must take place in accordance with established parliamentary procedures. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government has been ready for a discussion from the very beginning of the session. He added that the format, duration and the rule under which the discussion is held should be decided through consultations among floor leaders. The Opposition, on the other hand, has continued to press for a structured discussion under specific parliamentary rules and has sought accountability from the government over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Parliament is the cornerstone of India's democracy - a forum where differences are expected to be expressed, governments are held accountable, and national issues are debated in the spirit of constitutional responsibility. Disagreement is the essence of democracy. But when debate is replaced by repeated disruptions, democracy itself pays the price. Laws are delayed, public issues remain unresolved, and the people who sent their representatives to Parliament are left unheard. The responsibility of ensuring that Parliament functions rests with all stakeholders. While the government must be prepared to answer, engage and build consensus, the Opposition also must ensure that the House remains a forum where arguments prevail over adjournments. The question is not whether there should be disagreement. There should be. The real question is: Can disagreement lead to dialogue instead of deadlock? Can accountability and legislative business move forward together? And can Parliament once again reaffirm that in the world's largest democracy, debate, and not disruption, is the strongest expression of our democratic strength? Guests: 1.
