Vera Miles, one of the greatest actresses of her time, was born Vera June Ralston in Boise, City Oklahoma on August 23, 1929, to her parents Thomas and Bernice Ralston. She had three older brothers. Click below to check the trivia question Vera grew up first in Pratt, Kansas, but her family later moved to Wichita where she found a job working nights as a Western Union operator and typist. She graduated from Wichita North High School in 1947. She was crowned with the honor of Miss Kansas in 1948 and went on to become the third runner-up in the Miss America pageant. In addition to those pageants, Ms. Miles also was crowned as Queen in a handful of other contests including Miss Maid Margerine, Miss Texas Grapefruit, and Miss Witchita. While she was a contestant in the Miss American pageant, Vera was signed to a contract with RKO studios and went off to Hollywood to start her new career as an actress. In Los Angeles. Vera met a rich, eccentric multimillionaire named Howard Hughes who instructed her to go take acting classes. A man who worked for Mr. Hughes, Bob Miles, picked her up every morning to take her to her classes and soon enough they started dating. Less than a year later, Vera and Bob were married. Shortly after arriving in LA and taking acting classes per Howard Hughes's instruction, Vera chose to take Bob's last name of miles because an active film actress already went by the name Vera Ralston. Vera soon started landing minor roles in television and film, including a minor uncredited role as a chorus girl in 1951s Tow Tickets to Broadway, a musical starring Janet Leigh, whom Vera would later co-star with nine years later in Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror film Psycho. Vera went on to star in quite a few notable films and television shows. Some of her most memorable credits include roles in 1955's Tarzan's Hidden Jungle, 1956s The Searchers, 1959s A Touch of Larceny, 1962s Who Shot Liberty Vallance, 1966s Follow Me, Boys!, and 1972s Molly and Lawless John. She also appeared in TV shows like Murder, She Wrote, The Love Boat, and quite a few made for TV films. Vera was especially active on television during the 1980s. Her last film role was alongside James Belushi in 1995s Separate Lives, before retiring from acting. She has since moved to Palm Desert, California where she lives a quiet life out of the spotlight.
