"Kali Thammatheang," or "Grandpa Mon," a 70-year-old farmer from Ban Phachan, Pho Thrai District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, toiled to support his family like many others in the area. Twenty years ago, he discovered a path to a secluded yet peaceful life in his later years, choosing to live on a large rock cliff, building his own shelter and making a living by fishing. Grandpa Mon's home has a roof built on the cliff face, supported by wooden beams, and is constructed in four tiers, varying in height according to the cliff's contours. When the water level rises, he cannot stay on the lower level, so he has built his sleeping quarters higher up the rock. Grandpa Mon is well-known among fishermen along the Mekong River in both Thailand and Laos for his kindness and friendliness. Many fishermen of all ages frequently visit him at his cave. Grandpa Mon not only relies on nature but also strives to conserve the environment around him. Inside Grandpa Mon's cave, there are various kinds of trash and discarded items that have floated down the Mekong River. He collects them, arranges them for distribution to those in need, and sells some to scrap dealers. He also conserves energy by using small solar panels for electricity when needed. Every morning and evening, he paddles across to bathe on the Laotian side of the cliff. A small waterfall flows through the cave into the Mekong River, providing clean water from the natural headwaters, which benefits all life on the river. Grandpa Mon loves and cherishes the Pha Chan cave because it benefits the people along the Mekong River. He intends to live until he is 100 years old, continuing to care for this living space for people to depend on, to the best of his ability as a cave dweller.
