Perspective: Population Slowdown

In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on Population Slowdown. Today we’re going to talk about India’s population growth. According to the National Family Health Survey data for 2019-21, the country’s population is set to fall as its Total Fertility Rate – which is the average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime has dropped to 2 for the first time. In the 2015-16 survey, the national TFR was 2.2, and before that in the 2005-06 survey it was 2.7. Now it has dropped down to 2 – which is below replacement level. The replacement level TFR, at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next one, is estimated to be 2.1. The findings suggest the TFR has declined to 2.1 in rural areas and 1.6 in urban areas. On the show today, we will analyse the key findings of the latest NFHS survey, what it means for India, the challenges before the country as TFR falls and the way forward. Guests: 1. Dr. J. K. Bajaj, Director, Centre for Policy Studies 2. Dr. S.K. Singh, Professor & Head, Department of Mathematical Demography and Statistics, IIPS 3.
