Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled (FULL COVER)

Starting 2025 I wanted to challenge myself and try covering all instruments on two songs that I already played on drums. The first song is Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled by Porcupine Tree (from 2000 album Lightbulb Sun). It is divided in two sections very different one from the other, the first is played by acoustic guitars and the voice with some parts of keys and fretless bass and it is in 4/4 time, the second one is in 6/8 time and acoustic guitars and the voice leave the space to drums, bass and 4 layers of keyboards (the most important one is the mellotron layer). The real leading role is played by pieces of two recording from speeches of Marshall Applewhite, the american leader of a religious sect of which its 39 members decided to die in May 1997, because they where convinced to be alien from another world, living in the Earth only for a little period and they thought that they could come back to their own world on the Hale-Bopp comets, leaving their human bodies and running away from out planet before it was destroyed. Pieces of Marshall speeches are not metrically edited but they fit perfectly with instrumental melodies and with drums fills that are played. In this album the drum is played by the first drummer of the band Chris Maitland, not by the next and more known one Gavin Harrison. Despite that the groove of Chris in this song is very near to the Gavin style. In the future live exhibition of this song Gavin will change the groove preferring a more linear one (maybe because more suitable for live, but in my opinion less interesting). I have not executed all keyboards parts like in the album, cutting some parts because I wanted to play 4 layers all in one take. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Con l'inizio del 2025 ho voluto, per sfida con me stesso, cimentarmi nel imparare e registrare un paio di brani che già avevo suonato con la batteria, anche con tutto il resto degli strumenti, nel modo migliore che mi riusciva. Il primo brano è Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled dei Porcupine Tree (da Lightbulb Sun del 2000). E' diviso in due sezioni abbastanza distinte, la prima composta principalmente da chitarra acustica e voce in 4/4 con qualche intervento di basso fretless e tastiere, la seconda in 6/8 dove acustica e voce vengono abbandonate per far entrare la batteria e lasciare spazio a basso e tastiere più consistenti (in particolare spicca una linea melodica di mellotron). La vera protagonista di questa seconda sezione è però la registrazione della voce di Marshall Applewhite, leader americano di una setta religiosa i cui 39 membri, convinti di essere alieni sulla Terra solo per un periodo di passaggio, si tolsero la vita durante un rito di massa nel Maggio 1997 per poter lasciare il loro corpo umano e raggiungere il proprio pianeta d'origine con la cometa Hale-Bopp, di passaggio in quel periodo vicino alla Terra, prima che quest'ultima fosse distrutta. Nel brano sono presenti proprio alcuni spezzoni di due discorsi di Marshall e, nonostante questi non siano "ritoccati" dal punto di vista metrico, sono stati "incastrati" perfettamente con la parte strumentale del pezzo, con i vari stacchi di batteria, e con le parti melodiche continuano a susseguirsi una dopo l'altra. In questo disco la batteria è suonata da Chris Maitland, primo batterista della band, e non dal successivo e ben più noto Gavin Harrison. Nonostante ciò il groove di Chris qui si avvicina molto allo stile di Gavin, che per assurdo dopo il suo ingresso nel gruppo lo cambierà con uno più lineare, forse più adatto alla sede live (anche se meno interessante a mio avviso, nonostante io sia un adulatore di Harrison).
