What effect does the water level have? Airflow, draw, sound With diffuser: Depends on the performance; the better the performance, the closer the airflow should be – just above the holes. Without diffuser: One finger's width Test Take a drag and see if you can hear anything. Blow and see if anything comes out of the bowl. Trick: Always find the perfect water level. For opaque bowls, find the water level, roughly fill it but not enough, take a drag, no sound, add more water to the hose connection, take another drag, sound? Test the venting, no smoke from the bowl? Perfect.
