In this episode, Pram and Pras will take a break from corporate law and public policy. We'll turn to a very personal chapter: the world of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts (TCMA), specifically the Wu-Tang Bajiquan style. We'll explore the dark history of the Cultural Revolution in China, and why traditional martial arts were once severely suppressed for being deemed too "feudal." In this world, the relationship between teacher and student is sacred—a Master's position can even be more revered than one's own father. We'll also explore the story of the exodus of Grand Masters who fled to Taiwan to save this golden era of martial arts from mass extinction. Even more exciting, Pram will explore the extraordinary legend of Li Shuwen. He was the pinnacle of martial arts, whose three main students became bodyguards of three of the greatest political enemies of the 20th century: Puyi (the last Emperor), Mao Zedong, and Chiang Kai-shek (who was personally guarded by Grand Master Liu Yunqiao). Don't forget, we'll also reminisce about how generations of practitioners—including Pram himself and his fellow martial artist, Andi Lianto—were able to plunge into this world inspired by Ryuchi Matsuda's legendary manga, Kenji. We'll dissect the logic, curriculum, and mechanical efficiency behind Bajiquan training—from the basics of Jingang Bashi to physical training with the Daqiang (Great Spear).
