Black Magic
The Black Magic is a Traditional Wet Fly tied in the Northern Spider Style. It is primarily tied to represent anything small, black and unidentifiable such as Midges, Mosquitos and small Terrestrials. When the going is tough and the fish are pre-occupied with tiny black things, this fly may mean the difference between a blank day and your limit, sort of like magic! My reference material for this fly is on p145 of the book "Trout and Salmon: 220 Favourite Flies" To quote: "BLACK MAGIC Simplicity itself to tie, this little gem of a fly can be offered on waters running and still with confidence, especially when anything small and dark is hatching. HOOK: Size 14-18 THREAD: Black BODY: Tying thread THORAX: Peacock Herl HACKLE: Black Hen" Trout and Salmon: 220 Favourite Flies p145 1998, 2002 ISBN 0 9533087 2 3 I have unfortunately chosen to tie it with a Black Cock Hackle feather as I do not have a Hen Cape in Black but apart from that it is true to the pattern in the book. I would personally choose this fly for fishing my local River, Afon Vyrnwy as part of a team of 3 flies in the top dropper position on a leader of about 10ft. Cast across and downstream and swing the flies over the tail of a pool. On stillwaters I dare say it could floated and used as a Dry Fly for finnicky Rainbows or used as a top dropper in a team of Nymphs.
