Madagascar’s Illegal Trade | Deadliest Journeys

Inside the extreme survival crisis in Madagascar, where thousands risk their lives daily for two of the earth's rarest treasures: Rosewood and Sapphires. In the depths of the Masoala jungle, illegal loggers known as the "festy festy" (the clever ones) endure torrential rains, malaria, and oppressive heat for just €5 a day. Their mission? To haul 500-kilogram logs down steep mountains and navigate deadly river rapids on fragile rafts to feed the massive black market demand in China. Meanwhile, in the south, the town of Ilakaka has become a chaotic "Eldorado"—home to the largest sapphire deposit on Earth. Driven by extreme poverty, everyone from students to former taxi drivers digs the ocher earth by hand. Miners drop blindly into narrow, 10-meter-deep shafts, tunneling horizontally with zero structural support. It’s a literal game of Russian roulette, where cave-ins are frequent, and many never make it back to the surface. If you want to understand the true, human cost behind luxury gemstones and rare wood, this deep dive is a must-watch. Director: Daniel Lainé, David Geoffrion
