Roden Crater: Art that transcends disciplines
Arizona State University launched an unprecedented academic partnership in 2018 with the internationally-acclaimed light and space artist James Turrell. Roden Crater is an unprecedented large-scale artwork created within a volcanic cinder cone near Flagstaff in the Painted Desert region of Northern Arizona. Within this volcano, Turrell is sculpting discrete viewing spaces and chambers in which individuals may experience the light from celestial objects and observe the cosmos. Roden Crater academic programs at ASU aim to provide educational experiences for learners of all ages. Programs demonstrate the power of art to transform thinking and to work at disciplinary intersections. Field labs, design studios, internships, virtual and embodied learning opportunities are designed by faculty working across ASU. Courses build on James Turrell’s vision and the rich cosmic, geologic and human histories of the U.S. Southwest. 🔔 Subscribe: / asu About ASU: Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the country’s most innovative school, Arizona State University is where students and faculty work with NASA to develop, advance and lead innovations in space exploration.
