History Acton Burnell Castle was built in the late 13th century by Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells and Lord Chancellor to King Edward I. Despite its name, it was never a true defensive castle. Instead, it was a fortified manor house designed to display wealth, status, and royal favour. Robert Burnell was one of the most powerful men in England at the time, and King Edward I visited the site on several occasions. In 1283, Acton Burnell became historically important when it hosted the Parliament of King Edward I. During this gathering, the Statute of Acton Burnell was passed — one of England’s earliest major commercial laws dealing with debt and trade.
