Swanage Railway - Diesel Gala - 10/05/19

The weekend of the 10th - 12th May saw the Swanage Railway host their annual 'Diesel Gala', with a plethora of visiting diesels complementing the home fleet. The 2019 event saw the exciting addition of trains running down towards the Swanage Railway's boundary with Network Rail at the River Frome viaduct. As ever, the Gala was preceded with a 'Preview Day' on Thursday the 9th, with the theme being 'Type 2' locomotives. No less than six locomotives made the trip to the Isle of Purbeck. Starting with a Sulzer duo - Class 25 No. D7535 and Class 26 No. 26007 would be visiting from the South Devon Railway and Barrow Hill Roundhouse respectively. Venturing away from the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway was Class 31 No. 31163, which is presently carrying the number 97205, and adorns the former Railway Technical Centre livery. This colour scheme was carried by two members of the class, which were reclassified as Class 97s Nos. 97203 and 97204, before being put to work on departmental duties. Whilst 97205 is a fictitious number, it would've been the next number to be used, had another Class 31 been acquired for use by Derby RTC. Also making the visit to Dorset was GB Railfreight liveried Class 50 No. 50007 'Hercules'. Many eyebrows were raised earlier this year when it was announced that 50007 'Hercules' and 50049 'Defiance' would be repainted into GBRF's house colours, in recognition of the partnership between GBRF and the Class 50 Alliance. The repaint was funded by the former, and both 'Hoovers' were unveiled at Eastleigh Works in March. In addition, 50007 carries the identity of scrapped classmate no. 50014 'Warspite' on one side. GB Railfreight would provide two of their own locomotives, with Class 59 No. 59003 'Yeoman Highlander' and Class 73 No. 73119 'Borough of Eastleigh' making an appearance in between main line duties. Two 'Cromptons' made up the home fleet - Class 33s Nos. D6515 'LT Jenny Lewis RN' and 33111.
