In the early years of Israel's existence, the country experienced an unprecedented refugee crisis. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants arrived in the young state, which was simultaneously waging war and struggling with shortages of housing, food, and medical resources. It was during this period that one of the most painful and controversial stories in Israeli history emerged – the Yemenite children's case. Hundreds of families claimed that their infants were taken to hospitals or medical facilities and then reported dead. Parents were not shown the bodies, were not given an explanation of the circumstances of the deaths, and were often unable to identify the burial site. Years later, some families began receiving military draft notices in the names of children officially considered dead.
