07 Rudesheim am Rhine

Germany Trip 2026 Episode 07: Rudesheim am Rhine Rudesheim am Rhine served as my home base while cycling along the right bank of the Rhine. Anchoring the center of town is St Jakobus Kirche, a 15th c. church with 10th c. origins. The church was heavily damaged during World War II, accounting for the relatively stark interior. For a fun-filled change of pace, I visited Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett, a lovely medieval home containing all manner of mechanical musical devices, some of them centuries old. The Adelerturm is a 15th c. riverside tower, which was part of the former city walls. The name derives from the 19th c. inn, Zum Adler, which was located in the tower and at which Goethe stayed on several occasions. The Brömserburg is a blocky, 11th - 12th c. fortification on the banks of the Rhine. After dinner, I happened upon a college ensemble performing in the town square. They were from Royal Holloway University in London. The jazz band played first, followed by the traditional English brass band. What a delight!
