Die Donaumonarchie Österreich-Ungarn - 05. Vorlesung
The 1848 Revolutions, the Austrian Reichstag, the emancipation of the peasantry, Franz Joseph, liberalism, the March Constitution, property-based suffrage Even contemporaries were unsure what to make of this state. Was it a "prison of nations" where oppressed peoples yearned for liberation in their own states, or was it a model of peaceful coexistence among different languages and cultures? Was Emperor Franz Joseph a relic of bygone eras, or a benevolent and just ruler of all his subjects? Did the administration in this empire operate effectively or inefficiently? Was the state modern or backward? And was this entity inevitably doomed to collapse sooner or later, or was it a precursor to today's EU and might have had a great future had it not been destroyed in World War I? This lecture will certainly not provide definitive answers to all these questions. But it will offer much food for thought regarding historical developments in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. She will provide insights into the system of European powers during this period, the development of nationalisms, the treatment of Jews, the conflicts between monarchical and democratic principles, industrialization and the social question, the expansion of transportation and healthcare, and the development of the judiciary and administration, the military, and warfare. She will cover European regions whose history is otherwise rarely discussed. And, of course, she will also address the rich legacy that the Danube Monarchy left behind in science and culture, literature and music, a legacy that continues to garner it so many admirers. The lecture will focus primarily on the period from 1867 to 1918, but the preceding events will also be adequately explained.
