The airfield was handed over by the infantrymen who took it to the US Marines who will use the facility as a forward operating base. Marine Apache helicopters were being used to support ground troops. Overnight the advancing marines encountered some resistance from Iraqi forces and began shelling around Samawah. The division overcame the Iraqi forces there, sustaining no casualties themselves. On Sunday as the US troops advanced towards Baghdad they encountered sporadic resistance from Iraqi troops. After initial contact Iraqi soldiers began to surrender. Some thirty prisoners of war were taken as the advance continued. The US military said their convoy consisted of some 10-thousand vehicles burning half a million gallons (two million litres) of fuel a day.
