Stair Cane Demo: Can It Make Stairs Easier and Safer? (PT Explains)

I still can’t believe stair canes are only a recent invention. It’s such a simple idea, but for the right person, it can be a highly effective and stable option for getting up and down stairs. This may be especially helpful for people dealing with knee buckling after a stroke or other neurological condition, weakness, post-surgical pain after something like a knee replacement, or just needing a little extra confidence and support on stairs. One thing I want to clarify from the video: I know some of the different techniques may have gotten a little confusing. In real life, there may be more than one way to use a stair cane depending on the person, the stair setup, the railing, their strength, and which direction they are going. The big things are: The stair cane needs to be sized appropriately. All feet of the stair cane need to be firmly on the ground. The posts should be vertical and perpendicular to the floor, not tilted way forward or backward. THE PUSH BUTTONS NEED TO BE FULLY DEPLOYED to lock the cane in place and prevent it from collapsing User needs the right amount of help, supervision, or instruction if they are not safe doing it independently. For some people, there may be several reasonable options for hand placement and step pattern. The goal is not to force one exact technique on everyone. The goal is to find the safest, most stable setup for that person. As always, this video is for general education and is not medical advice. If you are not sure what mobility device or stair technique is right for you or a loved one, please work with a physical therapist or qualified healthcare professional.
