Project Hail Mary Review — The Best Sci-Fi Movie Since Interstellar?

In this video, I review Project Hail Mary, and I completely understand why Andy Weir's novel became one of the most beloved modern science-fiction books. This movie reminded me of Interstellar in the best ways. Both films ask humanity to confront an extinction-level threat through science, sacrifice, and hope. But where Interstellar leans into grand philosophical questions, Project Hail Mary focuses more on scientific discovery, optimism, and the unexpected friendships that can form in the most impossible situations. Critics have frequently compared the two while noting that Project Hail Mary brings a lighter, more humorous tone to its emotional journey. The biggest reason the movie works is Ryan Gosling. For much of the film, Gosling carries the story almost entirely by himself, balancing humor, vulnerability, and determination while making an incredibly difficult role feel effortless. His performance has been one of the most consistently praised aspects of the film, helping earn Project Hail Mary outstanding reviews from both critics and audiences. It currently holds 94% on the Tomatometer and 95% from verified audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, the movie isn't perfect. For me, the biggest weakness was the flashbacks on Earth. While they provide important context for Ryland Grace's mission, they occasionally interrupted the momentum of the story. I found myself much more invested whenever the movie stayed in space. Still, those slower moments don't take away from what is ultimately a fantastic film. The emotional payoff, beautiful visuals, scientific problem-solving, and unforgettable chemistry between the characters make this one of the strongest sci-fi adaptations in recent years.
