Painting from Memory: What Watercoloring is Truly About

Can you truly paint a sun that never sets? 🏔️🎨 When I set out to paint the legendary Midnight Sun in Alaska, I wanted to capture the magic of the Arctic solstice exactly as it happened. But nature had other plans. Between the cold and the overwhelming beauty of the landscape, I had to do the unthinkable for a plein air painter: I gave up. But that is where the real story of this painting begins. In this vlog, follow along as I pack up my supplies and bring this watercolor piece back into the safety of my studio. Safe from the elements, I had to rely on something much more powerful than a camera or a reference photo—I had to paint from memory. This video is a gentle reminder of what watercolor painting is truly about. It’s not just about replicating a perfect landscape on a page. It’s about capturing a feeling. It’s about how a place makes you feel, the memories it inspires within us, and how we carry those emotions into every brushstroke. Whether you’re an artist struggling with a failed project or someone who loves the wild beauty of Alaska, I hope this video inspires you to embrace the imperfections of the creative process. ✨ Don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification Bell for more art adventures! ✨ 🎨 MATERIALS USED IN THIS VIDEO: https://trailboundsketches.com/blog/2... #watercolorpainting #MidnightSun #AlaskaArt #PleinAirPainting #ArtVlog #PaintingFromMemory #WatercolorTutorial #CreativeProcess About Trailbound Sketches: Founded by award-winning Alaskan artist and filmmaker, Max Romey, Trailbound Sketches is a production studio and a vibrant global community.
