Pitch In - The Power of Pitching In - Episode 1
Lehmo travels across the country to meet the volunteers whose commitment has shaped clubs, strengthened communities and changed lives. From a 90-year-old archery coach inspiring generations, to a football club volunteer who found hope and support after unimaginable loss, and a regional sport leader championing grassroots clubs, each story reveals the profound impact of giving back. Together, they show that while sport may bring people together, it's the volunteers behind the scenes who create true belonging, strengthen communities and keep local sport alive. Guests Hans Wright, OAM (Frankston Archery Club, VIC) 90-year-old Hans Wright OAM is a lifelong figure in Australian archery, who has spent nearly 60 years coaching and mentoring at Frankston Archery Club. His steady, inclusive leadership has shaped generations of archers and helped build a club culture that has endured across decades. Hans is more than a coach - he is an institution within the club, embodying how one volunteer’s commitment can anchor a community and create a lasting sense of belonging. Samantha Saffioti (Roleystone Football Club, WA) Samantha Saffioti has been a driving force at the Roleystone Junior Football Club since 1999, dedicating more than 26 years to almost every volunteer role imaginable. Her story extends far beyond the club itself. After the devastating loss of her husband, and later the tragic death of her son in a car accident, Samantha was met with a club community that rallied around her in profound and unwavering support. Her experience reflects the deep, human truth of community sport: that clubs are not just places to give time, but places that can hold people together through unimaginable grief. Megan Carr (Valley Sport, Shepparton, VIC) Megan Carr is a respected leader in regional community sport in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, with more than 20 years’ experience across club leadership, governance and sport development. As President of Shepparton Golf Club and Executive Officer at Valley Sport, she has worked across the system to support grassroots clubs and strengthen participation pathways. Megan offers a grounded perspective on the many moving parts required to keep community sport alive, highlighting the essential but often unseen work of volunteers.
