When the circle is inside a polygon, we say that it is circumscribed. Understand everything about polygons inscribed and circumscribed in the circle in this video by Professor Lucas! We can say that every regular polygon can be inscribed or circumscribed within a circle. This means that in every regular polygon we can “draw” a circle inside and outside it. If the circle is inside the polygon, we say that the circle is inscribed in the polygon or that the polygon is circumscribed within the circle. On the other hand, if the circle is outside the polygon, we say that the circle is circumscribed within the polygon or that the polygon is inscribed within the circle. When we deal with the subject of inscription and circumscription of polygons, we generally adopt the notation r for the radius of the circle inscribed in the polygon, and R for the radius of the circle circumscribed within the polygon. We will adopt this same notation throughout the lesson. Note: the radius r of the inscribed circle is also called the apothem. In this case, we use the notation a to refer to the radius (or apothem). We will study the inscription and circumscription of the equilateral triangle, square and regular hexagon.
