Zaberers was an incredibly popular and sprawling restaurant, which hit its peak level of success in the 1960’s to 1970’s. When you arrived, you were welcomed to “Zaberville.” Once inside, you could enjoy “Zaberized” cocktails. The Zaberers name was everywhere. Everyone from ordinary citizens from all over dined at Zaberers … and, so did some of the most famous people including: United States Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, Jimmy Durante and Liberace, to name just a few. Zaberers opened on June 12, 1961. It was the former Gables Inn, which had been in business since 1929. Charlie and Rita Zaberer renamed it Zaberers and they coined a great tagline, “Zaberers, Minutes Away.” The phrase became so iconic, that it was engraved on the tombstone of one of The Zaberers. Charlie Zaberers passed away in 1971 from pancreatic cancer. Zaberers continued to operate until the early 1980’s, until the Atlantic City casino era began and eventually closed forever.
