Mauro Stemberger, Bonsai United

In the Italian Alps, Mugo pines grow struggling between rocks, snow, and avalanches. Hear from a rugby player-turned-bonsai artist on why the mountain always shows up in the tree — and why a taxus from Spain could never be mistaken for one from Japan. Mauro Stemberger has practiced bonsai for over three decades and is internationally recognized for his work with alpine and European conifers. Trained as an architect, he founded Italian Bonsai Dream in 2005, a workshop space dedicated to advanced practice and exchange. He travels extensively worldwide, teaching and sharing his approach with students and professionals.
