Cactus Nido de Pájaro 🐦 - Mammillaria decipiens camtotricha
Mammillaria decipiens subsp. camptotricha, popularly known as the "Curly Spiny Prickly Pear Cactus" or "Bird's Nest Cactus," is a succulent plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. It is native to Mexico, primarily found in states such as Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, and Guanajuato. Its most distinctive feature is the tangled, disordered appearance of its spines, reminiscent of a small bird's nest. Main Characteristics 🌱Body and Growth: This small cactus tends to branch profusely from the base, forming dense, low, cushion-like colonies. The individual stems are globose to cylindrical, ranging in color from bright green to dark green. Tubercles (Mamillae): Unlike other cacti that have ribs, this genus features conical, elongated, soft, and flaccid tubercles that extend noticeably outward. 🌵 Spines: This is its most famous feature. It has 4 to 5 radial spines per areole (sometimes more), which are extremely long (up to 3 cm), thin, flexible, and irregularly curved or twisted. Their color varies from pale yellow to gold to light brown. Due to their flexibility, they don't prick as sharply as other cacti. 🏵 Flowers: The flowers are small, about 1.5 cm long. They are funnel-shaped and white or cream-colored, sometimes with subtle greenish or pinkish lines on the outside. They have a delicate and pleasant aroma and usually bloom in the leaf axils of the tubercles during spring and summer. 🏵 Fruits and Seeds: After pollination, it produces cylindrical, elongated fruits that range in color from light green to pink and contain small brown seeds. Basic Care ☀️Lighting: Requires very bright light. It appreciates direct morning or late afternoon sun, but it's advisable to protect it from the intense midday sun in summer to avoid scorching its green foliage. 💧Watering: Water moderately. Use the "soak and dry" method, allowing the potting mix to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, watering should be almost completely suspended to prevent root rot from excess moisture. 🪨Potting and Repotting: It needs well-draining soil, ideally a cactus mix with a good proportion of porous material such as pumice, gravel, or coarse sand. Repotting every two to three years into a slightly larger pot is recommended to give space to new growth. 🌡️Temperature: Prefers warm climates. It can tolerate occasional temperature drops close to 0 °C as long as the substrate is completely dry, but its optimal development range is above 10 °C.
