Lecture 9 Part 1 in the Stiffness Method series presents a complete, start-to-finish coding example for analysing an indeterminate beam using the direct stiffness method. Building on the theory and implementation covered in previous lectures, this lecture shows how to implement the full beam-analysis workflow in MATLAB/Octave — from element definition and stiffness assembly through to solving for displacements and recovering support reactions. In this lecture, we cover: ✅ Full beam-analysis workflow using the stiffness method ✅ Defining beam nodes, elements, and connectivity ✅ Assigning material and section properties ✅ Formulating beam element stiffness matrices ✅ Assembly of the global stiffness matrix ✅ Creating the global load vector ✅ Applying support boundary conditions ✅ Solving for unknown nodal displacements and rotations ✅ Recovering support reactions ✅ Interpreting beam behaviour and structural response ✅ Clean reporting of numerical output for engineering interpretation and validation using FTool ✅ Step-by-step MATLAB/Octave implementation This example demonstrates how the stiffness method can be used to analyse indeterminate beam structures in a systematic and reliable way.
