WHY ARE THEY AFRAID OF TALIB BENSOUDA? THE TRUTH MANY DON’T WANT TO HEAR By Njie L. Manneh 09/07/2026 Talib Ahmed Bensouda is targeted by some of his critics for two main reasons. First, his mother, the respected legal practitioner and former Chairperson of the Janneh Commission, played a pivotal role in ensuring accountability during one of the most important periods in The Gambia’s democratic transition. The Commission’s findings led to sanctions against individuals found culpable of wrongdoing, with some being barred from holding public office for a number of years and others permanently. For many, the resentment directed at Talib is simply misplaced anger over decisions made through a lawful national process. Second, some detractors attempt to question his heritage. The facts tell a different story. Talib’s grandfather originated from Morocco but made The Gambia his home, marrying a member of the family of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, the founding President of The Gambia. Talib’s father, Ahmed Bensouda, married Mrs. Ami Drammeh-Bensouda, a proud Gambian. Talib himself is married into a Fulani family. His story reflects the very essence of The Gambia: a nation built on unity, diversity, and shared identity. His family connections span different backgrounds and communities, representing the rich fabric that makes our country strong. Many Gambians believe that the hostility directed at Talib Ahmed Bensouda has little to do with policy or leadership and more to do with personal resentment, political rivalry, and jealousy. Despite constant attacks, he remains one of the few political figures whose message consistently focuses on national unity, good governance, and bringing Gambians together regardless of tribe, region, or background. At a time when division threatens to weaken our national cohesion, Talib Ahmed Bensouda stands as a symbol of a united Gambia, one nation, one people, and one shared future. His supporters believe that leadership should be judged by vision, competence, character, and commitment to the nation, not by ancestry, tribe, or family background.
