Roy Campos, president of Consulta Mitofsky, believes that the demonstrations by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) and other social groups dominated the public agenda last week and negatively impacted the recovery in Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum's approval rating. He explained that the mayor's approval rating remains around 59% after several days of political tension. During her press conference, Sheinbaum defended the progress made in union democracy and reminded the public that the education reform implemented during Enrique Peña Nieto's administration was reversed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government. She also maintained that some of the CNTE's demands would imply a return to systems that fostered corrupt practices. Roy Campos praised the mayor's strategy of setting limits on negotiations with the dissident teachers, arguing that budgetary constraints prevent her from meeting some of their demands.
