Subscribe to the Aipo YouTube channel to stay up to date - Phenological phase: first swelling of the olives The olives begin to grow and swell significantly, reaching an average size of between 14 and 18 mm. This process is visible both to the naked eye and with measuring instruments. The first swelling marks the start of fruit formation, during which the olives increase the number of internal cells. From the second half of July, the stone will most likely harden, followed in August by the accumulation of reserve substances and their transformation into fats. Furthermore, between the end of June and the beginning of July, the first floral induction for the following campaign occurs. Summary of average weather conditions this week Temperatures (Max 34.8°C | Min 17.1°C) High maximum temperatures on June 20 and 27 (over 34°C) can cause thermal stress to the plants, especially if accompanied by ventilation or low humidity. However, the minimum temperatures remain mild, which maintains good general conditions for nocturnal photosynthesis and leaf metabolism. Relative Humidity (Min 37% – Max 90%) The values are well distributed, with some maximum peaks (such as 25 and 22 June), but never prolonged for many consecutive days. Ideal conditions to avoid acute water stress without entering areas too at risk for cryptogamic diseases, although visual monitoring remains recommended. Global Radiation (Up to 29.4 MJ/m²) Excellent overall irradiation, especially on 25, 22 and 23 June, favoring the growth of the fruits and the synthesis of nutrients in the stone fruits. The olive tree prefers these light levels to maintain a positive energy balance. Wind and Direction (max gusts 10.5 m/s from NE) Sustained gusts from the North-East and North (10.5 m/s) especially in the early hours of the day: Positive for aeration of the canopy and leaf drying. However, pay attention to the fruit holding in the cultivars most sensitive to early detachment. Technical considerations It was a favorable week for vegetative growth and photosynthesis. Now is the right time to: Evaluate foliar treatments with microelements if the development is in the phase of hardening of the stone; Plan any light pruning for aeration to accompany the summer phase well; Avoid treatments in the central hours on days above 32°C, favoring early morning or late afternoon. Good growth in this phase can have a decisive impact on the final production. If fertilization has not been carried out in autumn or at the beginning of vegetative recovery, summer is a useful time to provide the nutrients necessary for the ripening of the fruit load. After the physiological post-fruit drop, by mid-July, growth occurs mainly through cell distension and it is therefore still possible to guarantee the right nutritional intake, compatible with the company's resources. Phytosanitary situation Olive moth (Prays Oleae): in treated olive groves, monitoring has shown a marked reduction in adults. Those who have not yet carried out interventions can consider the use of Spinetoram (e.g. Delegate™ WDG by Corteva). In organic farming, Bacillus thuringiensis is recommended. Olive fly (Bactrocera oleae) adult captures are increasing. It is the ideal time to install traps for mass capture, especially in table varieties that already show tasting bites. Olives, in this phase, emit attractive substances that favor the attack. Brown stink bug (Halyomorpha halys): presence of adults, eggs and nymphs. It is recommended to intervene with Deltamethrin (e.g. Decis Evo), which offers a dual action: control of the stink bug and support for treatment against the moth. Peppercorn scale insect (Saissetia oleae): over 90% of the eggs have hatched. Those who have not yet carried out a treatment can act with mineral oil (e.g. Oliocin Plus by Bayer) or soft soaps (e.g. FLiPPER by LDT). Peacock eye (Spilocaea oleagina): where presence is confirmed, treatment with copper oxychloride or hydroxide is recommended (e.g. Airone Più by Gowan Italia) or Pyraclostrobin (e.g. Cabrio Olivo by BASF). Management of grassy land It is recommended to keep the height of the grass no higher than 25 cm, by cutting with equipment that shreds or chops the grass, then leaving it in place. Management of non-grassy land July and August: management of nitrogen and phosphorus in the olive grove Full review at www.aipoverona.it - SERVICES Tel. 045 8678260 @aipoverona Subscribe to the Aipo YouTube channel to stay up to date -
